welcome to the cup
I have been extremely fortunate to enjoy some incredible moments in my golfing career. Two British Open wins, five Australian Opens and six Australian Masters titles to name but a few.
But I’ve always maintained that perhaps the greatest highlight was being part of the first (and so far, only) International team to win The Presidents Cup in 1998. And to win it at home in Australia, on a world-famous course where I’m a member, and playing alongside my good friend Steve Elkington, made it even sweeter. The memories of that week will last with me forever.
So it’s a real honour to be coming back now as captain of the International team. It makes me both proud and excited to try and win the cup back after 13 years. If the action and atmosphere in November is half as exciting as ’98 then that will be worth the price of admission alone.
You are going to see some of the best players in the world competing at the very peak of their powers. The Americans have a great team and a fiercely competitive captain and it’s a big ask but I’m supremely confident my guys will get the job done. I’m sure all of Australia’s notoriously passionate golf fans will want to be there to see history made.
Royal Melbourne is simply one of the greatest golf designs in the world and a fitting stage for such a prestigious tournament like The Presidents Cup. It is part of the famous Sandbelt region and there are few areas like it in the world where so many excellent courses are gathered in one place.
We are truly blessed in Australia with some magnificent courses and as this supplement explains, Victoria offers some great golfing and holiday destinations. I have designed several courses in Victoria and the Moonah Course at the National at Cape Schanck on the Mornington Peninsula ranks among my top ten courses of all time.
So when you come to cheer us on at The Presidents Cup, make sure you keep this supplement to hand and take the time to get out and explore Victoria.
See you at the Cup!
Greg Norman, International Captain 2011 Presidents Cup
